Diocese of Shinyanga

The Diocese of Shinyanga was inaugurated on 20th November, 2005.  It is situatated in the Shinyanga region 164 kilometers south of Lake Victoria.  The Lake attracts tourists from around the world.

The Diocese serves six districts: Shinyanga town, Shinyanga rural, Kishapu district, Meatu District, Bariadi District and Maswa District.  According to the year 2000 census the population of the Diocese is 2.8 million.

The diocese has 49 churches in six deaneries. There are sixteen clergy of which only four are theologically trained; there are no trained evangelists.  The diocese also runs one primary school and two kindergartens.  To date it has no Bible School, no Health Centre, no active projects, no bank account and no vehicle of Diocesan transport.  It does have vision, hope and a determination to do the Lord’s work

The Diocese started with a debt of Tsh 3,900,000/=, about US$ 2,294 borrowed from Good Samaritans of different races and religions who assisted a great deal in helping us to complete the office for the Diocesan Headquarters and to provide the expenses of the inauguration ceremony.  The Diocesan office staff are working mainly on a voluntary basis with small incomes from Sunday collections in the Diocese’s churches as they are able to contribute.

THE VISION OF THE DIOCESE

   1.  Training Church Personnel

bulletClergy for Church management and care
bulletEvangelists for Church Planting
bulletLaity in various church departments such as secular education and health education

   2.  Evangelism to the Grass Roots (E.G.R.)

This is an organization planned by the Bishop with the intention of reviving the evangelistic duties performed by the late Ven. Canon Eliya Magoke who preached to the people in their homes and villages.  The work of church planting and preaching is to be restarted; counselling on the problems of HIV/AIDS, a healing ministry and research into the brutal killing of innocent old women who are believed to be witches will be added.

   3.  Humanitarian Services

Mama Gaudensia Ngusa witnessesd an old woman fainting and falling down in St Steven’s Cathedral during a meeting of the Mothers’ Union.  The old lady suffered from hypoglycaemia and needed urgent first aid which was given.  As a result of this Mama Nugusa ahs suggested an organisation FEED THE HUNGRY.  The aims of this organisation will be

bulletRefurbishing the dispensaries at Ng’wasingu and Solwa
bulletSustaining Mwadui Primary School and its kindergarten, and Bariadi kindergarten.

   4.  Other Projects

Some of the sorts of projects which we would like to be involved in are

bulletChurch shops
bulletHomes for rent
bulletBuildings for businesses such as conference centres, offices and hostels.
bulletNursery beds for tree planting.
bulletPoultry and dairy farms.
bulletTeaching residents about Biogas
bulletBee keeping

To do any of this we need help.  We need support in the form of materials, financial and technical assistance so that this infant diocese can stand on its own feet.  Our Diocesan congregations are doing their very best to support the work of the diocese as a whole; this means sacrificial giving at a time when the whole area is severely affected by the lack of rain in recent years with the consequent food shortages and little to provide a source of income.

All that we have comes from God.  We earnestly ask you to think carefully about sharing the gifts which you have with our diocese.

Thank you for reading this.
