St John's Unversity Inaugurated

The new established St John's University, an Anglican University in Tanzania was inaugurated on September 8, 2007. This involved the installation of Chancellor, Vice - Chancellor, members of the Council, and the Senate.

Archbishop and Primate of Tanzania, the Most Rev Donald Leo Mtetemela is the University Chancellor and will serve for six years. Prof Manoris Meshack will serve as Vice-Chancellor. Members of the Council are Ambassador Paul Rupia (Chairman) The Rev Canon Dr R. Mwita Akiri, Prof Paramagamba John Kabudi, Mrs Kate Bandawe, Mrs Rose Magenya, Prof Penina Mlama, Mrs Beatrice Rusibamahila, Dr Mishack Ngatunga, Prof John Nkoma, Hon. William Kusillah, Mr. Joseph Rugyamheto. And the Members of Senators are Dr. Hamidu Majamba, Mr. Alfred Boma, Mrs Mbena, Dr R. Mwita Akiri, Prof. Paramagamba John Kabudi. 

The University is now open with 800 students doing degrees in Theology, Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Business Administration.

We thank God that after hard work, perseverence, and patience of members of the Interim Council (Dr R. Mwita Akiri Mr George Mbowe, Ambassador Paul Rupia, Prof John Kabudi and Prof Manoris Meshack) and many others who served on the initial Task Force, Bishops, and many people (both Anglicans and non-Anglicans the Anglican Church of Tanzania, can now start to make a contribution in higher education in Tanzania.

Much remains to be done in the area of capital development as well as strengthening academic life of the University. But for now we must thank God for what has been achieved.

In the area of capital development, the immediate needs include the construction of more student hostels to accomodate a much increased and anticipated enrolment in te 2008/2009 academic year.

On academic side, there is a need for more Professors, senior lectures and lecturers, especially those with doctorates. Those with masters degree may also inquire from the Vice -Chancellor whose contact can be found on the website of St John's www.sjut.ac.tz University of Tanzania.
