Vision
A sustainable Church working together effectively
for the growth of God’s Kingdom through prayer, worship, preaching,
teaching, pastoral care and social services.
Mission
To proclaim the Kingdom of God through spiritual
and socio-economic transformation and empowerment of individuals and
communities to experience the fullness of life in God.
The Anglican Church of
Tanzania was established in 1970 as an independent Province and is
headquartered in Dodoma. It was carved from the Church of the Province of
East Africa [Kenya and Tanzania].
It has grown in term of
geographical area and membership. It has grown from 8 Dioceses when the
Province was created in 1970 to 21 Dioceses now (2007) with four million
members in both Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. One more Diocese will be
created by the end of 2007. It is expected that five more Dioceses will be
created by 2010
With its uniqueness within
Africa, the Anglican Church of Tanzania is made up of Evangelical Anglican
Church that owe their tradition to the Church Missionary Society (CMS United
kingdom, CMS Australia and CMS New Zealand) and Anglo-Catholic Anglican
Churches that owe their tradition to the British universities’ Mission to
central Africa (UMCA) which merged with the Society for the Propagation of
the Gospel (SPG) to form the United Society for the Propagation of the
Gospel (USPG). Both CMS and USPG are Anglican Missions.
Some of the Provincial
Institution, most of which are semi-independent of the Provincial Office,
are two Provincial Theological Colleges (St. Phillip’s located at Kongwa,
and St Mark’s in Dar es Salaam); the Central Tanganyika Press (CTP) and the
Literature Organization (SKM, trading as the Dar es Salaam Bookshop). The
ACT also has three semi-independent Associations: the Mothers' Union (MU),
the Tanzania Anglican Youth Organization (TAYO) and the Anglican
Evangelistic Association (AEA).
In Tanzania, the Anglican
Church is led by the Archbishop who is elected every five years by the
Provincial Synod. He leads the church as primus inter pares (first
among equals) and continues to be bishop of his Diocese. The current
Archbishop is the Most Reverend Donald Mtetemela, the Bishop of the Diocese
of Ruaha.
The administration of the
Province is the responsibility of the. General Secretary, based at the
Provincial Office in Dodoma, (500 km west of Dar es salaam)
