The diocese of the Southern Highlands was established on 25 November 1999. It occupies an area of 2,000 sq km covering the Mbeya Region.

The Diocese is very active in Evangelism, Community Development and Quality Health Care. It runs an Area Community Development Programme including projects for agricultural productivity, education improvement, health, water and sanitation, orphans support, HIV/AIDS home based care, and voluntary counselling and testing.
