| The Diocese of Zanzibar | ||||
The diocese of Zanzibar was established in January 2001 and the present bishop was enthroned in August 2002. It occupies an area of 630 sq km. which covers the Zanzibar archipelago. Zanzibar Diocese and Tanga Diocese were formed in 2000 from the division of the Diocese of Zanzibar and Tanga which was itself established in 1892. It has 7 churches with 6 evangelists and about 2,000 Anglican Christians. 4% of the population are Christian with Anglicans in the minority. The other 96% of the population are Moslem. The Diocesan headquarters are located in the former slave market in Stone Town, Zanzibar (Unguja). Tourism is particularly important to Zanzibar.The diocese has its own hostel with restaurant and a tour company. The diocese faces problems with the lack of permanent partners from overseas, high levels of poverty, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and the sustainability of development programmes. The Diocese runs nursery and kindergarten schools and is involved in projects concerning HPT, HIV/AIDS, Tie-dye batik, Savings and Credit Union, and secretarial services.
