The Diocese of Morogoro was part of the Diocese of Central Tanganyika until November 1965 when this diocese was inaugurated; the Rt. Revd. Gresford Chitemo was consecrated in November 1965 as its first Bishop.  Bishop Gresford retired on 29th November 1987 and Rt Revd Dudley C. Mageni, the present bishop, was consecrated and enthroned as the second bishop.

At present the diocese has 82 parishes in 18 deaneries.  These are home to more than 500 churches or congregations which together have approximately 102,000 members served by 120 pastors, including those who have retired.

The diocese has ten departments :

CHUMO

is concerned with all training of pastors and Evangelists in the diocese. It is made up of three programmes which are :

Development Department

has the following programmes :

bulletPRA Programme

This programme is running seminars in the villages to help people identify their problems and try to find solutions themselves before they ask for help from somewhere.

Mission, Evangelism and Literature Department

Health Department

with Berega hospital and Tinguli Health Centre.

Christian Education

concerned with Religious Education in Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Colleges.

Mothers' Union

with a sewing class programme

Finance Department

Youth Department

Also concerned with HIV programmes.

Technical Support Department

concerned with the repair of vehicles and with the Building Section.
